Pup's Great Adventure - School Project

Project Requirements
The requirement for this project was to develop a game that teaches young children ages 4 - 7 their colors and shapes as well as recognizing simple word spellings.
My Role
As the project was initially established I stepped into the role as the Lead Designer and programmer with my teammate providing art and sound assets for the project. My responsibilities included concept development, mechanics development, level design, story writing, as well as team and time management.
Development
The Concept
The concept for this was largely inspired by Indiana Jones and Rugrats. The main character is outside playing with his/her puppy and it begins to get dark and the main character knows he has to get inside and to your room before the sun goes down. At this point the world changes. His/her yard and house become a jungle with a temple, the father becomes a sleeping giant, and the mother becomes a medusa like monster.
The player just navigate through the house via creating a path for the puppy. This is done by matching shapes and colors together within each scene.
The Challenge
With the age group being so young and having varied experiences several steps were taken to allow those playing the game to grasp it despite being able to read or hear. Each level is fully voiced and also offers text to explain what to do. Beyond that each shape, word, and color when clicked says the name of that shape, word, or color.
The Goal
The overall goal of the game is to teach the user shapes and colors but from the user perspective the goal is to make it through the temple (house) and reach your room with your puppy.
Developing the Controls
The controls are simple click and drag. This allows for the age group to be able to play the game without needing to understand the alphabet. It allowed for easier entry into the game and more intuitive controls.
Testing
Testing was done within the target age group. The interesting feedback that we received from the testing was the addition of the test for the game. This allowed for a wider range of users to play the game.
